What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a number of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve. If left untreated, a patient’s vision can gradually become worse and even cause blindness.

Glaucoma is a disease where the optic nerve becomes damaged, most commonly as a result of increased pressure in the eye.  This damaging of the optic nerve ultimately causes a gradual but serious loss of vision.  Untreated, the disease often results in complete blindness.

Risk Factors & Prevention     

There are no known ways to prevent glaucoma. However  there are risk factors identified that indicate your susceptibility to Glaucoma. The risk factor include

  • High Blood pressure
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Far sightedness
  • Eye surgery/ injury
  • Diabetes or cardiovascular disease
  • Japanese & East Asian ethnicity
